The Wonderful Cross!
“The Wonderful Cross”!! That almost sounds cruel, heartless, considering what little we can comprehend of the immense suffering the Prince of Glory must have endured. We are cognizant of the way “The Wonderful Cross” implies perhaps a lack of humility or understanding on our gain from Your suffering. But this is not our intention today! Today, we are reminded of the plan, the love, the Holiness of this act of Salvation while we were yet sinners. It has even been described as a “Reckless Love” that was demonstrated on that first Easter. 1 Corinthians 1:18 8 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. So, we lovingly sing of the Wonderful Cross today. The Scripture from Hebrews 12:2 puts it in to perspective for us: 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Of course, we will still struggle to comprehend the wonder of it all. We do believe and loudly proclaim that YOU have RISEN from the grave, removing the sting of death and the load of sin we no longer need to carry. As we worship a powerful, loving and Holy God today, we call on You to answer this prayer for us: 14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!
